WHAT IS THE CHAOS UNCOVERED SAGA?
The Chaos Uncovered Saga is a connected series of three urban-fantasy adventures, written for the NEWEST edition of Cypher, designed to pull player characters into a living city where corruption festers beneath everyday life and ancient forces stir below the streets. Each installment can be run on its own, but together they form an escalating narrative of mystery, consequence, and creeping dread; one that begins with street-level trouble and descends into something far older, darker, and far more dangerous.
The saga opens with The Hands of Chaos, where a public kidnapping in a bustling market exposes rival fortune hunters, Rat-kin thieves, and the first visible traces of the Eyes of Raja and the Cult of the Rat Lord. What begins as an investigation quickly spirals into sewer-bound horror and the discovery that the City’s underbelly is far from dormant. This first adventure establishes the tone of the saga: grounded urban intrigue, morally gray factions, and the unsettling sense that familiar places are not as safe as they seem.
From there, the story fractures and deepens across two parallel threats. The Eyes of Raja follows the fallout among competing groups of fortune hunters, power brokers, and other shadowy factions; those who see the chaos not as a warning, but as an opportunity. This chapter pulls the characters into rival adventuring crews, illicit relic trades, and the dangerous politics of people who believe they can control what’s been uncovered in the depths beneath the city. At the same time, Cult of the Rat Lord drags the narrative downward, revealing how the cult adapts and grows beneath the streets. Rat-kin warrens splinter or are forcibly unified, technomantic relics are unearthed and misused, and violent cult cells begin operating beneath multiple districts. Strange pulses ripple through the city’s underbelly. People disappear. Entire neighborhoods feel subtly wrong. By the time characters descend into the cult’s hidden sanctums, they are no longer preventing a crime or stopping a rival; they are racing to stop an awakening already in motion.
At the heart of the saga lies the City With No Name, a sprawling urban environment deliberately left undefined. It is a dense knot of crowded markets, sacred districts, decaying slums, and forgotten infrastructure layered atop an ancient undercity. The City is written to function as a complete stand-alone setting, with factions, power struggles, and buried threats ready to use at the table. At the same time, it is intentionally modular. Its lack of fixed geography, rulers, or canon history allows GMs to seamlessly reskin it as their own homebrew city or graft its districts, cults, and undercity directly onto an existing urban fantasy setting. The Chaos Uncovered Saga is built to adapt to your world…not replace it.
Each adventure emphasizes player-driven investigation, meaningful choices, and consequences that echo forward. Combat is dangerous and often claustrophobic. Information is fragmented and unreliable. Allies may be desperate, compromised, or hiding their own secrets. As the saga progresses, the tone shifts from discovery to survival, from rumor to revelation, and from isolated threats to city-wide instability.
